The indispensables of GEO, and why they are mostly SEO

GEO without the hype: the seven things that get a brand cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, and how each one rests on SEO.

A new acronym, a new wave of agencies, a new line on the invoice. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is the practice of getting your brand cited by AI systems: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is real, it moves numbers, and we have watched citations for our clients rise by 244% on average over the year we have tracked them. It is also, in large part, SEO with a stricter examiner. Anyone selling it to you as a replacement for search optimisation is selling you the same work twice.

Here are the seven indispensables, and for each one, the SEO foundation it stands on.

1. Rank first, get cited second

AI systems do not read the whole internet every time you ask a question. Google's AI Overviews draw mostly from pages that already rank for the query. ChatGPT and Perplexity run a web search and read the top results. If you are on page three, you are not in the conversation.

The SEO underneath: technical health, crawlability, internal linking, authority. Nothing new. Everything necessary.

2. Answer in the first sixty words

The model is looking for the passage that answers the question, and it favours passages that do so directly, under a heading that matches. A page that spends four paragraphs on context before getting to the point loses to the page that leads with the answer.

The SEO underneath: featured snippet optimisation, which has worked exactly this way since 2016. The reader changed; the format did not.

3. Say things that can be checked

Models cite facts: numbers, dates, named methods, defined comparisons. They do not cite adjectives. "Best-in-class" is invisible. "Reduced checkout abandonment from 71% to 58% across 40 stores in 2025" is a citation waiting to happen.

The SEO underneath: E-E-A-T, Google's name for experience, expertise, authority and trust. GEO simply raised the bar on the evidence.

4. Be present where the models already trust

Reddit, review platforms, industry press, Wikipedia where relevant, comparison sites. AI systems weight these sources heavily, often above brand sites, because they read as independent. If the only place your brand is described accurately is your own homepage, the model will describe you using someone else's words. Usually a competitor's.

The SEO underneath: digital PR and link building, reframed. The goal used to be a link. Now it is an accurate mention on a page the model reads.

5. Structure for machines, not only for people

Clear headings phrased as questions, lists where the content is a list, tables for comparisons, schema markup for FAQ, Product, Organization and Article, an author page with a real name. None of this guarantees a citation. All of it removes reasons not to be cited.

The SEO underneath: on-page optimisation and structured data, the least glamorous part of the craft and the part most brands skip.

6. Keep it fresh and consistent

Models prefer recent, and they notice contradictions. If your pricing page says one thing and a press article from 2024 says another, you have handed the system a reason to trust neither. Update the pages that matter, date them, and make sure your name, address, product names and claims say the same thing everywhere.

The SEO underneath: content maintenance and entity consistency. Boring, effective, and rarely budgeted, which is the description of most things that work.

7. Measure citations, not only clicks

This is the one thing SEO never had to do. A citation in an AI answer may not send a click, and it still shapes what the buyer believes before they ever search for you by name. Track a fixed set of your buyers' questions across the main systems every week, note whether you are cited, where, and next to whom, and watch branded search alongside it.

The SEO underneath: rank tracking, with a new column. The habit is the same; the object is different.

The honest summary

If your SEO is solid, GEO is a few months of focused work on the pages that answer your buyers' real questions, plus a presence on the third-party sites the models read, plus a weekly measurement habit. If your SEO is not solid, GEO is a distraction, and the money is better spent on the foundation. We do both, in that order, and we will tell you which one you need in the first call. We would rather lose a GEO engagement than sell one on a site that cannot rank.
